The Great Arrival (도착한 그곳엔)

Project Description

The Great Arrival imagines an ecosystem newly formed through the migration of humans and other living beings into space. In this world, marine organisms are no longer the forms of life we once knew on Earth. They have become transformed beings, adapting to unfamiliar environments by altering their shapes, structures, and colors. Fins evolve to navigate spaces of different densities, while their bodies develop new forms of luminescence to illuminate themselves in darkness. Space migration, then, is not “starting over from nothing,” but rather an act of extending already transformed environments and beings into another dimension. It is not a rupture, but a continuation; not a beginning, but an ongoing process.

In the weightlessness of space, organisms and artificial materials float together, no longer clearly distinguishable from one another. In a world without up or down, the boundaries between living beings and objects, nature and technology, also begin to dissolve. Artificial fragments such as plastic are no longer merely discarded remnants of human civilization. They become traces of the time humanity has lived through, dispersing into space like a kind of “cosmic DNA.” What we have created may drift farther than we do and endure longer than we will. In this new environment, these fragments encounter and merge with unfamiliar forms of life, generating ecosystems that no one has ever seen before. Through the paradox of pollution becoming the foundation for new life, the work envisions a cycle in which endings and beginnings become intertwined.

The video begins in a dark, seemingly lifeless universe, where new beings gradually arrive, one by one. Organic forms derived from nature intermingle with artificial colors across the screen, and what once appeared to be a dead space slowly begins to breathe again. Warmth spreads through the cold darkness, and a world that had been still begins to move. Eventually, space is reconstructed not as an empty and unknown realm, but as another habitat inhabited by humanity, other forms of life, and the traces we carry with us. What was once empty becomes filled; what was once unknown becomes a place to dwell.

At this point, the work quietly overturns our familiar understanding of “departure.” We are not simply leaving Earth behind. We are moving into space while carrying ourselves, the environments we have created, and an Earth that has already been irreversibly transformed. This is not a purified new beginning in which everything is left behind, but an expansion that carries with it every trace of our existence on Earth—beauty and damage, life and pollution alike. The Great Arrival suggests that moving toward a new world does not mean erasing the past. It means inevitably bringing the past with us.

The video reinterprets illustrations by the German biologist and scientific illustrator Ernst Haeckel, using AI as a collaborative creative tool to imagine life forms migrating into space. A pioneer in bringing science and art together, as well as in the visual representation of scientific knowledge, Haeckel produced images that have inspired generations of artists. If Haeckel used the microscope to observe organisms invisible to the naked eye, the artist uses data and AI to visualize unseen worlds and speculative forms of future life. Inspired by Haeckel’s drawings, these newly imagined organisms leave Earth and migrate to an unknown planet somewhere in the universe, where they establish their own ecosystems and flourish in vibrant new forms of life.

Displayed on the monumental screen in front of the departure area—a place where journeys and departures begin—The Great Arrival quietly asks: "Are we really leaving for somewhere new, or are we simply extending the world we have created farther into space?"

And ultimately, it whispers another possibility: perhaps we have already been living in the cosmos all along.
