Sea Unseen is a multi-channel video artwork that depicts a futuristic ocean landscape covered in plastic. The video portrays plastic-hybrid marine creatures awakening from hibernation, one by one, floating upwards, swimming freely, and moving vibrantly within the sea. As they come to life, they connect, interact, and communicate with one another.
The video begins with a cold and tranquil winter scene, gradually transitioning into a warm and colorful atmosphere, symbolizing the emergence of life and hope. At first glance, these plastic-hybrid creatures appear exotic and vibrant, resembling fantastical marine organisms. However, upon closer inspection, their forms and textures reflect artificial characteristics of plastic, subtly implying that they are the result of human intervention. This serves as a metaphor for the consequences of humanity’s excessive plastic consumption and the environmental pollution it has caused.
Yet, towards the end of the video, a sense of hope emerges as life triumphs over plastic pollution, blossoming with renewed vitality. The artwork presents a narrative of life, the ocean, and light, inviting viewers to reflect on the impact of human activity on marine ecosystems.
Beyond its visual beauty, Sea Unseen conveys a profound message, prompting contemplation on the delicate balance between nature and human influence. It emphasizes that even in the harshest conditions, life continues to grow, and vibrant energy surrounds and propels us toward a brighter future.
This work is an extension of the artist's ongoing data art activities over the past several years and will allow viewers to face the reality of climate change through direct and artistic experience and realize changes in their own behavior. The artist is a data artist active in San Francisco bay area, California and Korea, and has been producing visualization and audio work based on environmental data for the past six years. California, USA, is one of the places where climate change is particularly serious and has experienced various environmental problems such as droughts, wildfires, air pollution, and earthquakes over the past 10 years, and is a place where changes in animals, plants, and ecosystems due to plastic are especially visible.
보이지 않는 바다 (Sea Unseen)는 플라스틱으로 뒤덮인 가상의 미래의 바다 풍경을 보여주는 멀티 채널 영상 작품이다. 영상은 겨울잠에서 깨어난 플라스틱 하이브리드 해양 생명체들이 하나씩 깨어나면서 위로 부유하고 자유롭게 헤엄치면서 바다 속에서 생동감있는 모습으로 움직이고 서로 연결되고 상호작용하고 교감하면서 보여지는 모습을 그린다. 영상 초반에 겨울의 차갑고 고요한 풍경 속에서 시작하여서, 점점 따뜻한 빛과 색채로 피어나는 생명과 희망을 담은 작품이다. 그리고 언뜻 보기에는 플라스틱 하이브리드 생명체들은 얼핏 보면 화려하고 이국적인 생명체처럼 보이지만, 각 생명체의 형태와 질감은 플라스틱의 인공적인 특성을 반영하고 있어 인류의 손길이 닿은 결과임을 은유적으로 나타낸다. 이는 인간의 무분별한 플라스틱 사용과 그로 인한 환경 오염이 초래할 수 있는 미래를 상징적으로 표현하고 있다. 하지만 영상 말미에는 플라스틱의 오염을 이겨내고 희망차게 새롭게 피어나는 희망의 모습을 보여주며 생명, 바다, 빛에 대한 이야기를 관객에게 선사할 것이다. 보이지 않는 바다 (Sea Unseen)는 단순히 시각적인 아름다움을 넘어서, 해양 생태계에 미치는 인간의 영향을 반추하게 만드는 메시지를 담고 있다. 이 작품은 혹독한 계절 속에서도 생명은 끊임없이 자라나고, 생동감 있는 에너지가 주변을 감싸며 밝은 미래를 향해 나아간다는 메시지를 전한다.
이 작품은 지난 수년 간 이어진 작가의 지속적인 데이터 예술 활동의 연장선으로서 관람객에게 기후 변화 현실을 직접 체험과 예술적 경험을 통해서 직시하게끔 해주고 스스로의 행동 변화를 실감하게 해줄 것이 다. 작가 한윤정은 미국 캘리포니아 샌프란시스코와 한국에서 활동하는 데이터 아티스트이며, 지난 6년간 환경 데이터를 기반으로 한 시각화와 청각화 작품을 제작해왔다. 미국 캘리포니아는 특히 기후 변화가 심각하게 일어나는 곳 중 하나이고 지난10년간 가뭄, 산불, 태풍, 지진 등 다양한 환경 문제를 겪어왔고 특히나 플라스틱으로 인한 동식물과 생태계의 변화가 눈에 띄게 보여지는 곳이다. 그 예시로 캘리포니아 바다 사자는 태평양의 기후변화로 멸종위기에 놓여있고 호수와 강의 물이 메말라서 몇몇식물종 또한 멸종위기에 놓여있다. 국립해양대기국(National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration-NOAA)에서는 이러한 기후변화를 심각하게 바라보며 다양한 기후변화 관련 데이터를 공개하여서 사람들의 행동 변화와 기후변화대책을 모색하고 있다. 작가는 NOAA의 오픈데이터(산불, 가뭄 등)을 조금 더 사람들에게 기후변화 현상을 와 닿게 시각화하고 정보를 전달하려는 작업을 해왔다. 본 신작 “See Unseen”도 이러한 연장선에서 해양기후변화와 플라스틱 오염에 대해 생각해볼 수 있는 계기를 마련하고자 하는 취지에서 제작하게 되었다. 이 작품은 플라스틱 오염에 대한 해결책을 제시해주는 것은 아닐 것이다. 다만 현재 일어나는 모습을 직시하고 이해하는 것만으로도 큰 의미가 있을 것이고 이는 관람객에게 스스로의 행동 변화를 이끌 수 있는 기회로 작용하지 않을까 하는 생각이다.
