Project Description
The work “Sea Unseen” is an interactive art installation that shows a virtual future landscape covered in plastic. The work consists of the interactive installation, a digital print, and a 3D printed sculpture. When QR codes attached on plastic products are scanned, strangely changed coral reefs, fish, and sea creatures are displayed in real time in the underwater world on the projection screens. If you look at the scenery that changes according to the data entered by visitors, you can see the virtual nature of the ocean covered with plastic, as if it were happening in the future. The slower the decomposition rate of plastic products and the greater their size, volume, and weight, the larger and more bizarre the size and shape of the plastic forms created in the life forms that appear on screen. The experimental music and sounds were created by producer Maalib. The dark, experimental music that contrasts with the colorful underwater creatures seems to be the sound of nature calling out to us. In addition, the highlights of the world of interactive works are expressed as 3D printed sculptures and digital prints and are presented together in the exhibition.
Ironically, the world in the interactive installation video screen is colorful, beautiful, and dreamy. Mass production for plastic consumption in factories is widely and conveniently produced in alignment of popular culture. Due to its own aesthetic elements, the world on the screen covered with plastic looks colorful and beautiful. The combination of various shapes and colors can make it look visually harmonious. On the surface, it would seem as if we were seeing our society as the result of rational, beautiful, and comfortable choices. However, the fact is that it destroys the natural environment. This work will show the viewer an ironic view of a fantasy world or a destroyed world of the future where we have been brainwashed by plastic that has entered so deeply into us that it is now difficult to turn back.
This work is an extension of the artist's ongoing data art activities over the past several years and will allow viewers to face the reality of climate change through direct and artistic experience and realize changes in their own behavior. The artist is a data artist active in San Francisco bay area, California and Korea, and has been producing visualization and audio work based on environmental data for the past six years. California, USA, is one of the places where climate change is particularly serious and has experienced various environmental problems such as droughts, wildfires, air pollution, and earthquakes over the past 10 years, and is a place where changes in animals, plants, and ecosystems due to plastic are especially visible.
작품 “Sea Unseen”은 플라스틱으로 뒤덮인 가상의 미래의 풍경을 보여주는 인터렉티브 설치 영상 작품이자 디지털 프린트, 그리고 3D 프린팅 조각품이다. 관람객의 개입으로 플라스틱 이미지와 데이터가 입력되면 프로젝션 화면 속 바닷속 세상에서는 기이하게 변화된 산호초, 물고기, 해초 등이 실시간으로 보여진다. 관람객이 입력하는 플라스틱 데이터값에 따라 변화하는 풍경을 보면 마치 미래에 일어날 법한 플라스틱으로 덮여져 버린 가상의 바닷속 자연의 모습을 볼 수 있다. 플라스틱 제품의 분해속도가 느리고 크기, 부피, 무게가 클수록 화면 속에 나타나는 생명체에 만들어지는 플라스틱 형태의 크기와 형태는 더욱 거대해지고 기괴해진다. 시각물에 비롯되어서 만들어진 실험적인 음악과 사운드는 프로듀서 말립에 의해서 만들어졌다. 형형색색의 바닷속 생물체에 대비되는 어둡고 실험적인 음악은 마치 자연이 우리에게 외치는 소리인 듯 하다. 또한 인터렉티브 작품 세상의 하이라이트를 3D 프린팅 조각품과 디지털 프린트로 표현되어 함께 전시에 선보여진다. 인터렉티브 설치 영상화면 속 세상은 아이러니하게도 칼라풀하고 아름답고 몽환적이다. 공장에서 대량생산되는 플라스틱은 대중문화의 팝적인 요소가 가미되어 널리 쉽고 편리하게 생산되기 때문에 그 만의 미학적인 요소가 살아있고, 이 때문에 플라스틱으로 덮여져있는 화면 속 세상은 칼라풀하고 아름다운 느낌까지 들 정도로 다양한 형태와 색의 조합으로 시각적으로 조화로워 보일 수 있다. 마치 겉으로 보기에는 합리적이고 아름답고 편한 선택의 결과물로서의 우리 사회를 보는 듯할 것이다. 하지만 결국은 그것이 자연환경을 갉아먹고 파괴하고 있다는 사실은 불편한 진실로서 자리잡고 있는 것이다. 마치 우리가 알지 못하게 기생하고 있는 플라스틱 생명체처럼, 이 작품은 우리에게 너무 깊숙이 들어와서 이제 돌이키기 힘든 플라스틱에게 세뇌되어 버린 환상 속의 세계 혹은 미래의 파괴된 세계를 아이러니한 모습으로 관람객에게 보여질 것이다.
이 작품은 지난 수년 간 이어진 작가의 지속적인 데이터 예술 활동의 연장선으로서 관람객에게 기후 변화 현실을 직접 체험과 예술적 경험을 통해서 직시하게끔 해주고 스스로의 행동 변화를 실감하게 해줄 것이 다. 작가 한윤정은 미국 캘리포니아 샌프란시스코와 한국에서 활동하는 데이터 아티스트이며, 지난 6년간 환경 데이터를 기반으로 한 시각화와 청각화 작품을 제작해왔다. 미국 캘리포니아는 특히 기후 변화가 심각하게 일어나는 곳 중 하나이고 지난10년간 가뭄, 산불, 태풍, 지진 등 다양한 환경 문제를 겪어왔고 특히나 플라스틱으로 인한 동식물과 생태계의 변화가 눈에 띄게 보여지는 곳이다. 그 예시로 캘리포니아 바다 사자는 태평양의 기후변화로 멸종위기에 놓여있고 호수와 강의 물이 메말라서 몇몇식물종 또한 멸종위기에 놓여있다. 국립해양대기국(National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration-NOAA)에서는 이러한 기후변화를 심각하게 바라보며 다양한 기후변화 관련 데이터를 공개하여서 사람들의 행동 변화와 기후변화대책을 모색하고 있다. 작가는 NOAA의 오픈데이터(산불, 가뭄 등)을 조금 더 사람들에게 기후변화 현상을 와 닿게 시각화하고 정보를 전달하려는 작업을 해왔다. 본 신작 “See Unseen”도 이러한 연장선에서 해양기후변화와 플라스틱 오염에 대해 생각해볼 수 있는 계기를 마련하고자 하는 취지에서 제작하게 되었다. 이 작품은 플라스틱 오염에 대한 해결책을 제시해주는 것은 아닐 것이다. 다만 현재 일어나는 모습을 직시하고 이해하는 것만으로도 큰 의미가 있을 것이고 이는 관람객에게 스스로의 행동 변화를 이끌 수 있는 기회로 작용하지 않을까 하는 생각이다.
